Robert Owen warp and weft sculpture: engineering a concrete slab
Location
Trehafren Fields, Newtown
Project type
Structural engineering for a sculpture
Sculptor Howard Bowcott’s design is a concrete homage to textile manufacturer and philanthropist Robert Owen. It required lateral thinking to engineer an inventive solution that provides strength but doesn’t compromise elegance. A sub-base and reinforced concrete slab were needed to prevent movement across the structure due to the adverse ground conditions created by flooding. They are hidden in order to emphasise the upper structure of striking polished white concrete and black granite panels which represent a roll of textiles engraved with details of the life and accomplishments of Robert Owen.
