Salford Cathedral: temporary propping design
Location
Salford
Project type
Temporary scaffold works for a religious structure
We were asked to design the temporary propping of the timber trusses at Salford Cathedral.
The proposal consists of introducing a prop supported off a ladder beam that spans from wall to wall of the cathedral. This will lessen the need to strengthen the existing standards and bases. The work is ongoing currently.
There are two options regarding both the connection into the timber truss and how the lateral stability is provided for the propping detail itself depending on the situation on site.
The two options for the connection into the truss depend on the width of the truss, but also the availability of the bolts.
And for the lateral stability, we can rely on the existing scaffolding with the addition of lacing/bracing members between the existing and proposed scaffolding. Alternatively, the arrangement could be copied so to the truss either side of the rotten one, with lacers and bracing running between the 3 arrangements.
It's an interesting project on this lovely site.
