Independence House: commercial office construction

Location

York

Project type

Structural engineering for a commercial site

We regularly provide engineering solutions for commercial office constructions. Independence House, located just outside York, was formerly a traditional masonry-built office building. We produced designs for its extension and refurbishment.
Before we started the project, the building was part two-storey and part single-storey, with both pitched and flat roofs. Proposals included extending the office and car park and upgrading the landscape.
The proposed works were split into two distinct types of construction. The refurbishment of the existing office included removing the majority of the ground floor walls and changing the roof from a pitched to a flat roof construction. The rear extension tripled the usable internal floor area and was constructed using concrete metal decks and supporting steel frames.
The design of the rear extension was achieved by creating a 3D model within Tekla Structural Designer (TSD). The software and model allow the analysis to be easily modified and promotes integration between different parties. Thanks to the member quantifying tools within TSD, we were able to assist the quantity surveyors with lists of approximate steel sizes and weights.
Alongside other York companies, Vincent and Brown architects and GEM Construction, we delivered the project from initial concept to final construction stage.
